Kindle Quote of the Day Review

Quote of the Day Review – Review Introduction

This is a review of Quote of the Day – a quotation reference tool for Kindle by Svellsoft. It is available for $1.99 in the Amazon store and was released in March, 2012.

Available on the following Kindle versions as of 3/28/2012: Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle DX, Kindle 2nd Generation.

Quote of the Day Review – Main Takeaways

Quote of the Day is a simple, but well designed, quotation reference tool for the Kindle e-readers. The main screen displays a quote in an attractive conversation bubble with the author referenced below.  You have a choice of adding to or removing from favorites.  You can also press a “Surprise me” button for a random quote.

Browsing allows you to pick quotes from 21 categories.  You can also search for a quote, but only by the author and not by words in the quote.  This is limiting to me because I want to look up quotes, not quotes by authors.

No ability to add your own quotes. On the positive side, this app does not crash my Kindle every time I use it like the other quote application that is currently available.

Quote of the Day Review – Conclusion and Overall Rating

I would give my Quote of the Day review 3.5 stars.  Most of the quotes are pretty good, but it is a fairly limited collection for the price.  The app functioned well, but the refresh every few screens was quite annoying.  I find the title misleading because it is not really a “Quote of the Day” because you get a different quote every time you open the app and that might be more than once a day.

Kindle Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary Review

Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary Review – Review Introduction

This is a review of Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary– a dream tool for Kindle by Kismetech. It is available for $1.99  in the Amazon store and was released in February, 2012.  It is rated 5 stars on 13 customer reviews.

Available on the following Kindle versions as of 3/22/2012: Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle DX, Kindle 2nd Generation.

Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary Review – Main Takeaways

Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary is a dream interpretation tool and dictionary.  This is the first app of this kind for the Kindle e-readers and makes an interesting addition.

I honestly don’t remember most of my dreams and the ones I do remember tend to involve me working in my sleep.  That tells me I am probably a workaholic. I don’t need an app for that.

Upon entering the app, you have the ability to describe a dream in as many or as few words as you would like.  Then you run a search and the app looks for various words within the app and dictionary.

At any time you can review your dreams in the Dream Diary or also look through the Dream Dictionary by typing in whichever word you want.

Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary Review – Conclusion and Overall Rating

I would give my Way of Dreams Interpretation Tool and Dream Dictionary review 4.5+ stars.  The app has all 5 star reviews so far and many of the reviewers compared their results with other applications or books and found favorable comparisons.  If you are interested in dreams, then this is the app for you.

Kindle World Clock Review

World Clock Review – Review Introduction

This is a review of World Clock – a “time zone assistant” for Kindle by Bulbera. It is available for $1.99  in the Amazon store and was released in February, 2012.

Available on the following Kindle versions as of 3/5/2012: Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle DX, Kindle 2nd Generation.

World Clock Review – Main Takeaways

World Clock allows you to have multiple clocks from different time zones displayed in a grid or list format.  There are over 800 worldwide cities that you can choose from and then are able to customize the name displayed for that city.  So – if I have a family member in Savannah, Georgia, I can pick the Atlanta, Georgia selection and then modify it.

The app functions well and is very easy to use.  Choose from 24 hour format or AM/PM 12 hour formats.  Automatically converts for daylight savings time.  (I don’t know if it just uses US daylight savings time or actually determines the international ones based upon their daylight savings dates).

World Clock Review – Conclusion and Overall Rating

I would give my World Clock review 4.5 stars.  It works as advertised and would be useful if you deal with people in multiple time zones.  I think it is a bit overpriced for the functionality available in it, but if you need this on your Kindle – this is a great choice.

Kindle Simply Pack Checklist Review

Simply Pack Checklist Review – Review Introduction

This is a review of Simply Pack Checklist – a travel packing tool for Kindle by DSen Software. It is available for $0.99  in the Amazon store (normally $1.99) and was released in February, 2012.  Rated 4.5  stars on 2 customer reviews.

Available on the following Kindle versions as of 2/28/2012: Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle DX, Kindle 2nd Generation.

Simply Pack Checklist Review – Main Takeaways

Simply Pack Checklist is what it claims to be – a series of checklists for business and pleasure travel.  Check off items as you pack.  Put in the quantity.  Clear the lists when you get home.  It is very easy to operate and fairly thorough.

Kindle Simply Pack Checklist Active Content - adding items to list

I would like to see lists broken down a bit more by both electronic devices and their cords.  When you are a geek like me, I often travel with multiple Kindles, Nooks, computers, phones, cameras, running watches, etc. – and it is one thing to pack the right devices and another to pack the right cords.

Simply Pack Checklist Review – Conclusion and Overall Rating

I would give my Simply Pack Checklist review 4.0 stars.  It is a nice little app and works very well. I would like to see the ability to have an overall list that is easier to review as well as a couple of custom fields that I can enter for additional details.  However, it is a good value for the money and something that will come in handy for trips (business and vacation).

What is An Active Fiction Series for Kindle?

In the second round (ok – I guess one lousy app the first week is probably not really considered a ’round’) of unimpressive releases in 2012, the Kindle store released four apps that they are billing as “An Active Fiction Series for Kindle”.  I decided to try one of these new releases to see what the difference between an interactive novel and an active fiction series really is.

The new releases are as follows:

Getting Dumped by Tawna Fenske ($4.99)

Arcania – Trial by Fire by Liz Maverick ($3.99)

Dead Letter Office – Parish Mail 1 by Kira Snyder ($4.99)

Witch’s Brew – Spellspinners 1 by Heidi R. Kling ($6.99)

Each of these items is available for Kindle Touch, Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 2nd Generation and Kindle DX.

The item I purchased was Dead Letter Office – Parish Mail 1.  I am halfway through and it is a good novel. That’s it. Really.  It is a good novel.  Twice in the first half of the book I have had to make a decision that supposedly changes the outcome.  The decisions that multiple users make is also supposed to influence the next versions of these apps – since each is designed to be part of a series.

Don’t buy this if you are expecting it to be anything more than a novel – because it really isn’t (except for wanting you to turn on WiFi every time you launch the app).

Are they worth the price?  The Dead Letter Office is a good book and has me interested.  I’m not sure I would have spent that type of money for an unknown author. Yes – each of these women do have a history or writing screenplays, short stories, etc.  If I was the developer/writer, I would have started the first “book” at $0.99 to get people hooked on the book and wanting to try the other books in the set and buy more when they came out.  Then, if people are hooked, you could raise the price a dollar or two for the second book in the series.

Given that so many people want their books or apps for free – I think it is a risky decision to price these so highly.  The one I am reading so far does not make me want to shell out $5 for another book.  I’ll leave the final decision to you, but thought you might be interested in knowing what is really being marketed here.  It is not an app – it is a novel, plain and simple.
