This is a review of 24-7 Tutor (Foreign Language) Basic Phrases – a series of foreign language applications for Kindle developed by 24/7 Tutor.  My review is based upon 24-7 Italian – Basic Phrases. These apps were released in February 2011. They normally sell for $3.99 an app and are currently on sale for $0.99 each for a limited time.

24-7 Tutor (Foreign Language) Basic Phrases Review – Main Takeaways

Disclaimer – why I selected Italian for my review: I was fluent at one time in Italian having minored in it in college, so I thought that I would have a better understanding of what is included and what might be improved if I selected a language I was more comfortable with.

I have spent a couple of hours playing with this app and find that it is a nice way to build up your Basic Phrases or refresh your knowledge of a language.

Each application comes with several categories that you can select from, such as: First Phrases, How You Feel, Questions, Greetings, etc.  (12 categories in all). Within each category there are option for study and review including: Study List (all words in category listed), a Multiple Choice Quiz, a Word Puzzle, A Write In test, and Flash Cards.

This is by no means a comprehensive way to learn a language, but I think the app is well designed and a great way to improve your basic knowledge of a foreign language and to keep your skills up to date.  Some reviewers complained because there wasn’t the ability to listen to the words – that is a Kindle limitation and I don’t think the developers could do anything about it.

After reading some reviews and working through the app – there are a couple of weaknesses the developers should address:

  • Pronunciation – there are no pronunciation guides in the apps at all – much less on individual words.  While I could read words in the language, there would be no way I could say those words.  I think each section should have one area where it shows how to pronounce each word and phrase.
  • Context – some phrases need better context to indicate when they might or might not be appropriate
  • Basic language explanation – the developers are assuming that the user has some basic understanding of foreign languages.  English speakers may or may not be aware of informal versus formal versions of “You” and items such as this and they need to add a section to the apps to help explain this.

I would give my 24-7 Tutor (Foreign Language) Basic Phrases review 3.5 stars.  As I mentioned earlier, they normally sell for $3.99 an app and are currently on sale for $0.99 each for a limited time.  I am going to snap them up because I think the price is worthwhile.

My one suggestion for improvement would be to have the definite and indefinite articles shown with the word because I think that is critical for knowledge building and understanding of gender and plurality.

Kindle Grid Detective Review

Grid Detective Review – Review Introduction

This is a review of Grid Detective – a logic game by Amazon Digital Services.  It is available for free in the Amazon store and was just released today. Thanks to Happy Reader Joyce for the scoop on this game.

Interestingly enough – I was just thinking earlier this week how cool it would be to develop my favorite logic puzzles for Kindle and Grid Detective has done just that.

Grid Detective Review – Main Takeaways

Grid Detective is a logic game consisting of the logic puzzles you can often find at the newsstand. The instructions are well done and comprehensive. 

There are 31 puzzles available in the game – definitely try the 1 How to Play puzzle for a quick walkthrough.  There are also 10 each of Easy, Intermediate, and Hard puzzles.  I can already tell this won’t be enough puzzles for me.

In logic puzzles you use information from a background story and several clues to determine whether a solution is true or false in a grid.  False items are marked with an X, True items are marked with an O. By process of elimination you can solve the problem.  If you are having problems with the logic, take advantage of the 3 hints available.  Also – the ‘Erase Errors’ might come in handy on the more complicated puzzles.

The nice thing about the Kindle game is that once you mark a spot with an O – it fills in all the corresponding squares with X’s so that you don’t have to.  I do wish there at a certain point – when you know the answer but haven’t filled in all the remaining O’s in the grid – that you could have the puzzle acknowledge you solved it. 

Grid Detective Review – Conclusion and Overall Rating

I would give my Grid Detective game review 4.5 stars after my initial run through.  I hope they come out with a lot more puzzles. The only problems I see are that the grid gets a bit small on the Intermediate and Hard levels from trying to fit so much information into a small amount of real estate and that you cannot see all of the clues at once for the same reason (I find that seeing more clues allows me to quickly compare them to each other).
